You have to become a music editor - not a composer. When you can put your mind into that framework, it gets a lot easier. The shorter the edit, the trickier things get. Music comes second, the timing comes first. Cutting a 4/4 measure into 2/4, 3/4 or whatever? No problem. They need it to end where they need it to end. They could care less about our precious musical phrases. On the editing - you have to get outside your composer hat and put on an editors hat. First - there are four "beats" in every 4/4 bar.
